Pop it or Toss it!: The Boxtrolls

Hey Everyone! 

Today we have another Pop it or Toss it! review, and we will be talking about...The Boxtrolls! Now to be perfectly honest, I've kinda been avoided doing this post. Why? 'Cause I wasn't sure what to say. But now I've got some ideas (hopefully) so here we go!

Oh, and before i forget, in my last review I forgot to mention that there may be spoilers. I'll try my best to avoid them, and keep them to a minimal. But sometimes they're just hard to avoid.

I was totally stoked when I first saw about this movie on IMDB a few months back. First of all, this movie was going to be made by the same people who made Coraline and Paranorman. You don't even know what you are going into when you ask how much I love those movies! Besides that, I found the plot to be kinda cute and charming. Yes, I use the word charming for movies. And I don't use it for all of them. 

Let me explain charming real quick here before we officially, I use charming to describe a movie when it's 'cute', or when it really gives me that punch in the gut feeling. The good kind that is. Where you just keep thinkg about it, and you just say: WoW that was good.

Now to the verdict: Pop it....or Toss it?


Pop it?:

The looks:
It's stop motion. Stop motion holds a place very high up in my respect. I mean, do you know how long it takes them to blink! Which reminds me of one of the coolest things about the movie. You have to stay after the credits for this bonus scene: its where these two dudes from the movie are talking about stop motion. Saying things like: "What if all of those is being controlled, by some guy without a life? just this part would take a week!"  Okay, that was a REALLY BAD synopsis of this scene, so you really have to see it.



The story:I loved how unique this movie was. I always appreciate it when a film goes out of the norm. Even if it ends up bombing (that is bombing, not bombin'. Total opposites. keep note of that) , its still awesome. Like I expected, this movie had its own style in humor and charm. Yes, I said charm. The humor was way better than I expected. There were just certain parts of the movie that just made everyone in the theatre laugh. And I only laugh it is ACTUALLY funny. I'd explain some of the funny stuff to you...but as you can see from earlier you really just have to watch it, I won't do it justice. 

Toss it?:

Remember how I said this movie was kinda weird? Well it is. Definately. With a girl who is obsessed with morbid death, a boy that is convinced he is a boxtroll, and the villain is a halftime dragqueen that (Major Spoiler Warning) That dies from exploding from too much cheese! Don't get me wrong, I really think that all of this is awesome. So really this is where I actually should put the toss it section.

Toss It? (for realsies): Again here's gonna be spoilers, and only really makes sense to those who've seen it. What I really didn't like...was...The Jelly Guy! He was just....ugh! No one is gonne be hanging upside down for a decade and LIVE! When the Boxtrolls were telling the story of how they got Eggs, and they said the dad was killed, my first thought was: Wow these got gumption! Gumption being another word for guts, of course. Don't get me wrong, I'm not the creepo type that would be happier with that....It's just the fact that he was The Jelly Guy didn't sit right with me. 


The Verdict: It honestly depends on your taste. I thorougly enjoyed it, my dad enjoyed it, i think, but my sister and mom would never give it a chance to start. I think this film will definately surprise people. Which type of surpirse, that is unique to their case.
