Hey everyone!
Today I went to the dollar theatre to see The Book of Life with my friend. Can we all just take a moment to appreciate the dollar theatre? I mean how awesome is it that you can see a movie for under 5 bucks? They're a great thing to have on days like today, where you wanna go out, but you don't want to do anything.
I honestly don't know how I didn't get to see this in the 'real' theatre. This movie is awesome! Okay, I know I've been saying that a lot on this blog, but this movie really is cool. The story is great, and the animation is something none of us have seen before.
The Animation:
Animation is probably my favorite medium in film. It's an art of its own. Some kids movies are animated simply because it is captivating for the audience, or there was no other way to tell the story. What I really like is when movies like this really take the animation to the next level. The appearance of this film has NEVER been seen before. The way the characters look, and the way the different worlds look, it is all new. And its cool. Which that's a pretty sweet combination in my book.
The animation was not only gorgeous, but captivating, and really made the story what it was. This was purely an original film, with its own characters and its own world(s), and the animation is no exception.
The Story:
This story is great. It's a classic tale of a guy trying to get the girl. But it was told in a whole new way. I had seen ads for the movie, and I knew it was a romance related to Dia de los Muertos. Other than that, I had NO CLUE as to what I was going to see. I was just flat out guessing.
Was I disappointed?....(dun dun dun). Not at all. Probably a stupid question since I already told you I liked it, but...I try to entertain. There were many great things to this story. It had good character development, it had emotion, and twists that kept you watching. It's pretty clear that the writers (Jorge R. Gutierrez and Douglas Langdale) know what a good story needs, and how to do it.
The verdict….: I definitely would say pop it. If you have your doubts, whether it be that it looks weird, or you don’t like romances or kids movies. I’d say give it a try. It really isn’t strange as much as it is unique. And for the romance, lemme just say that I HATE ROMANCES! But this one, not only was it tolerable, it was enjoyable! And as for it being a kids film, this is no way at all your typical run-of-the-mill children’s film.
Thanks for reading!!!
